Who we are

We are the HEY Dyslexia Association. We are a group of dyslexia specialists in Hull and East Yorkshire.

We decide how your information on this website is used. In data protection law, that makes us the “controller”.

You can contact us at heydyslexia@gmail.com.

Do you use cookies?

No. This website does not use cookies. It does not show adverts, and you do not need to log in.

Do you count visits?

Yes. We count which pages people visit, so we know what is useful and can make the website better.

Cloudflare, which runs this website, counts for us. The tool is called Cloudflare Web Analytics.

When a page loads, a small script records:

  • the page you looked at
  • the page or search that sent you here
  • your type of device and browser
  • your country

It does not use cookies, or store anything on your device to follow you. We cannot tell who you are from it, and we do not try to.

You can say no to being counted. Use the switch at the end of this page, Stop counting my visits.

What happens when I fill in a form?

Our forms do not send anything by themselves.

When you press Send, your own email app opens with the email written for you. You can read it, change it, or not send it.

Nothing reaches us until you send that email.

What do you do with my email?

We read it and reply to you. We only use your details to answer you.

Our email inbox is run by Google (Gmail).

We do not sell your details. We do not pass them on to anyone else, unless you ask us to put you in touch with a specialist.

Our reason for using your details is to answer the question you asked us. The law calls this “legitimate interests”.

What if I tell you about dyslexia or my child?

Sometimes people tell us about their own or their child’s dyslexia, health or learning needs.

This is extra-sensitive information. We only use it to answer you. When we reply, we will ask if you are happy for us to keep it while we help you.

What about the “Join us” form?

If you ask to join, we use your details to talk to you about joining.

If you join, we put some of your details on your own page on this website, such as your name, photo, contact details, services and qualifications. We only do this with your permission, and you choose what goes on it.

Search engines may show these details too.

You can ask us to change or remove your page at any time. We will take it off the website within a day. Search engines may take longer to catch up.

Our website’s files are kept on GitHub. An older copy of your page may stay in the website’s history there, but it is not shown on the website.

What about the specialists’ pages?

Each specialist chose what goes on their page.

If you email or phone a specialist, that is between you and them. They look after your details, not us.

Who else helps us run the website?

These companies handle information for us. They only use it to provide their service:

  • Cloudflare runs the website and counts visits. Like every website host, it handles basic technical details, such as your internet address, to keep the website safe and working. It keeps a short record of each visit for a few days.
  • Google runs our email inbox (Gmail).
  • GitHub stores the website’s files, including members’ pages.
  • Pages CMS is the tool we use to edit the website. It keeps a working copy of the pages while we edit.

Some of these companies are in the USA or other countries. The UK has rules that let your information go there safely, such as the UK–US “data bridge” or contracts approved by the UK.

How long do you keep my details?

We keep emails for up to 12 months after our last reply, then delete them.

We keep a member’s details while they are a member. When they leave, we take their page off the website.

What are my rights?

You can ask us to:

  • tell you what information we hold about you, and give you a copy
  • correct it if it is wrong
  • delete it
  • stop using it, or use it less
  • stop counting your visits

If you said yes to something, you can change your mind at any time.

To ask, email us. We will reply within one month.

What if I’m not happy?

Tell us by email. We will let you know we have it within 30 days, try to put it right, and tell you what we did.

You can also complain to the Information Commission, which looks after data protection in the UK: ico.org.uk.

Changes to this page

If we change how we use your information, we will update this page first.
